Regulatory status

Alumni Startups Ltd is not required to be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority in so far as it provides information on or arranges deals in investments. This is because it is an Enterprise Scheme, which is exempt from regulation in arranging financial deals when not for pecuniary gain, as specified in the Financial Service and Markets Act 2000 (Exemption) Order 2001 paragraph 40.

For more details on the Enterprise Scheme exemption see the relevant section of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and subsequent amendments.

We consider that we meet this exemption because:

  • One of Alumni Startups’ principal objects is:
    1. the promotion or encouragement of industrial or commercial activity or enterprise in the United Kingdom or in any particular area of it; and
    2. the dissemination of information concerning persons engaged in such activity or enterprise or requiring capital to become so engaged; and
  • Alumni Startups does not act for pecuniary gain, levying charges on investors and businesses and seeking donations only to cover costs and pay modest salaries; and
  • Alumni Startups does not act on a professional basis as its activities are not on a large scale and are not for commercial gain, as specified in the FCA's guidance; and
  • Alumni Startups makes no investments itself, does not enable transaction on the platform and takes no part in negotiations.

Our intention is to apply for FCA authorisation if and when it becomes clear that we are likely to develop to the point where our exemption outlined above might cease to apply.

Please note that Alumni Startups Ltd is not authorised to give investment advice to investors.
